Superheroes Assemble!
Marvelous! is a volunteering activity that allows youths to participate in teaching English to children at a local orphanage. This event was initiated by Youth for You Kawanua, a youth community that was made by my cousin and I.
SUPER-DAY 1
We started with pizza! But it was not just an ordinary pizza, it was our handmade pizza! We took a piece of paper for each and then made a circle with our names, hobbies, favorite things, and etc written on it. We had a nice time knowing more about each other. After that we started learning vocabularies. We learned by playing crosswords, story telling, coloring, and of course dancing of our theme dance-song. It was super duper awesome!
SUPER-DAY 2
The second day was arts and crafts day with a pinch of fun and games. We started the day with a prayer and shared about the things we are grateful for when we woke up that day. Then we danced and played games, and continued our time in making super-characters using DIY ingredients and also recycled plastic bottles. Along the whole process, if the children wanted to ask for a certain tool etc they had to spoke it in English.
SUPER-DAY 3
Pool day hip hip hooray! The third day was spent at Mercy Water Park Manado. We spent the day with outdoor swimming and bonding. Both the kids and the volunteers was having a blast. We also ate a lot, chatted, played uno cards, and much more.
SUPER-DAY 4
It was sadly bye-bye day. The first agenda of the day was the sharing session. The volunteers and the kids was split into groups and had a personal sharing about their heroes in life, their daily problems and how they could be their own heroes to solve it, and so on. It was a teary session. Each group are then given the time to prepare a final performance based on what they had learned for the past days. The groups showed various performances, some was dancing and singing, and one even showed a theater act. When all was finished, we announced the awards and did some final speeches to say goodbye. Right after that, we ended all of that with a feast.
Even till now the kids at the orphanage are still contacting all the volunteers. All of us did not just enjoyed the process of learning English, but also the process of being a whole new family.
